Message From The Chief

Welcome and thank you for visiting our web-site.

The West Grey Police Service was formed in October 2001, after the amalgamation of the former Town of Durham, the surrounding townships of Glenelg, Bentinck and Normanby and villages of Neustadt and Ayton.

Policing in West Grey is a community-based activity and responsibility. This approach has proven to have a positive impact in reducing neighbourhood crimes, and in turn increases the overall quality of life for the citizens who live in and visit the municipality.

The West Grey Police Service is extremely dedicated to delivering optimum community-based policing to its very complex community and will continue its emphasis on community policing with increased foot patrols, bicycle patrols, community services and community involvement.

The police service consists of:

  • Chief of Police
  • Deputy Chief of Police
  • 2 Patrol Sergeants
  • 1 Crime Sergeant
  • 1 Detective
  • 12 Full Time Constables
  • 2 Part Time Constables
  • 1 Special Constable
  • 5 Auxiliary Officers
  • Secretarial and Civilian Support Staff

Certain officers are highly trained and dedicated to specialized units and investigations such as:

  • Criminal Investigation
  • Traffic Management and Road Safety
  • Scenes of Crime Investigation
  • Crime Prevention
  • Community Policing

We are excited about our newly formed K-9 Unit. In June 2007, after an extensive 13 week training program, Senior Constable John Noble and his K-9 partner, a male German Shepherd, named “Tye” graduated and came into service and specialize in locating lost or missing persons, suspect apprehension, property searches and Community Service.

We are equally as excited about the opening of our new satellite office in Neustadt which will make us more accessible to the citizens who reside in that part of the municipality. We look forward to opening similar satellite offices in other areas of the municipality in the near future.

It is my pleasure to serve the citizens of the Municipality of West Grey as Chief of Police. I am very fortunate to work with and proud of the members of the West Grey Police Service and the West Grey Police Services Board. Together, we look forward to providing the citizens of the municipality with the best police service possible.

Rene M. Berger,
Chief of Police
